Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation is the process of interpreting what is said, from one language into another, while it is being said. Though historically it was offered by in-person interpreters, in the last few years remote interpretation has revolutionized the industry by providing equivalent interpreting services at a fraction of the cost.
Linguative has a broad network of remote simultaneous interpreters all over the globe, delivering high-quality interpretation to global audiences through the. Event attendees can enjoy conference-level interpreting by listening to the language of their choice in crystal-clear audio and video on their computers.
This is made possible via our partnership with KUDO; a world leading multilingual remote event platform.

Onsite Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive Interpretation is the process of interpreting what is said, after it is said. The interpreter hears a sentence or short paragraph in the source language and then interprets it accurately into the target language. A consecutive interpreter is ideal for court and other legal proceedings such as trials, arbitration hearings and depositions, as well as for medical appointments. Consecutive interpreters are also recommended for business meetings and tours which are characterized by back-and-forth discussion and brief questions and answers. While interpreters often interpret onsite or on-premise, consecutive interpretation can be offered remotely via telephone or video conference using a variety of technology platforms. Our consecutive interpreters have an average of 5 years of working experience in a variety of industries.

In the consecutive interpretation mode, the interpreter interprets what is said in one language into another language, after it is said. For example, in a business meeting between a Spaniard and an Englishman, a Spanish interpreter is hired to provide consecutive interpretation. The interpreter waits for the Englishman to say a few words, or a whole sentence, or even a small paragraph. He then interprets accurately what has been said in English into Spanish and vice versa. Depending on the type of meeting, a consecutive interpreter often takes notes and even uses shorthand to remember all the words that have been spoken. The consecutive interpretation process necessarily makes for a longer meeting in order to allow the interpreter to interpret everything said, after it is said by each one of the participants in their respective language. However, professional consecutive interpreters can often interpret at a fast pace, ensuring that a meeting still flows smoothly.

Consecutive interpretation is ideal for meetings and proceedings where participants expect to speak in short segments. It is the preferred mode of interpretation for question and answer sessions during medical appointments, legal proceedings, trade shows and interviews to name a few, in addition to back-and-forth discussions in small groups, not to exceed three or four persons. It is possible to conduct presentations before large foreign audiences via a consecutive interpreter insofar as the speaker is comfortable pausing for the interpreter after each sentence. With short presentations or conferences which involve opening or closing remarks, or a brief introduction, the consecutive mode can be effective in adding a warm touch to an international meeting. For more extensive speeches or presentations, the simultaneous interpretation mode should be used.

  • Onsite consecutive interpretation is often the most efficient and reliable way of offering interpretation during a meeting.
  • A consecutive interpreter does not just interpret the literal meaning of each word from one language into another but conveys the full meaning accurately.
  • By being physically present the interpreter can see and hear what is being said perfectly and can in turn interpret more accurately and completely than in any other mode or type of interpretation.
  • Consecutive interpretation is ideal for question-and-answer and back-and-forth discussions.
  • The trained onsite consecutive interpreter is adept at handling interjections, interruptions, mid-sentence pauses and unpredictable conversation flows and interactions. Through it all a professional onsite consecutive interpreter manages the communication expertly to ensure that everything is interpreted impartially for the benefit of all parties.
  • Consecutive interpretation works perfectly in some of the following settings:
  • Business Services: Boardroom meetings, negotiations, brainstorming sessions, interviews, factory tours and workplace trainings. Our interpreters’ cultural sensitivity to foreign customs and their high level of specialization in the subject matter enables them to translate back and forth smoothly even when dealing with complex products and services.
  • Press conferences or presentations: In short meetings with larger audiences, it makes sense to have a consecutive interpreter on stage next to the speaker interpreting questions and answers back and forth from journalists or other attendees. Highly-trained consecutive interpreters have the experience and professional presence to remain focused in high-pressure environments when so much hinges on their competent interpretation.
  • Education: Onsite consecutive interpreters are recommended for parent-teacher meetings, individualized education programs (IEPs) and school conferences that often involve active engagement from all the parties.
  • Legal Services: In legal proceedings such as depositions, trials, arbitration, Workers Compensation and other hearings onsite consecutive interpretation is the best mode of interpretation to guarantee neutral, impartial and accurate interpretation. Certified court interpreters are prepared to interpret correctly in the most demanding and sometimes even hostile environments. Some judicial interpreters are also equipped to interpret consecutively during extremely technical proceedings requiring specialized knowledge in unique fields of law e.g. patent law.
  • Healthcare: For Independent Medical Evaluations, doctor’s appointments, hospitals visits and emergency room settings, onsite consecutive interpreters are trained to deliver high-quality interpretation to patients and providers alike. The onsite consecutive mode is the most helpful way to interpret for those who are injured, sick and requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Government and Non-Profit: Government, community and social services organizations benefit from onsite consecutive interpreters who can facilitate communication for asylum seekers, immigrants and ethnic minorities who only speak languages of limited diffusion.

We take the guesswork out of the selection process by recruiting only the finest consecutive interpreters with the specific skills necessary to complete your assignment successfully.

For general or non-technical consecutive interpretation lasting 8 hours or less, with reasonable breaks one interpreter is able to handle all the consecutive interpretation alone. However, for complex interpretations common in legal or business settings, two interpreters may be preferable. If a meeting is technically demanding and takes a long time, it becomes physically and mentally taxing to the interpreter in which case it is advisable for there to be a team of two interpreters who can take turns and assist each other throughout the proceeding.

Onsite Simultaneous Interpretation

Full range of onsite simultaneous interpretation and equipment rental services. Our experienced project managers quickly determine the best and most cost-effective interpreting solution for your next conference.

Simultaneous and consecutive, two primary modes of interpretation, are both used to bridge language barriers and help individuals understand each other. However in short, consecutive is referred to as a “stop-and-start” method, whereas simultaneous is “continuous.”

Consecutive Interpretation: Interpreter waits for the speaker to finish a sentence or thought before interpreting into the target audience’s language. This method can significantly extend the length of the meeting since consecutive interpretation naturally requires the repetition of the same communication from one language to another. However, it is ideal for interactive meetings with back-and-forth questions and answers. It is commonly used for business, medical, legal, interviews, small groups and one-to-one meetings.

Simultaneous Interpretation: Interpreter translates the speaker’s words at the same time as the speech is being delivered to the audience. There is only a short natural delay between what is being said by the presenter and the interpretation being provided to the audience in real time. Onsite simultaneous interpretation also requires professional installation and management of specialized equipment during an event. Another important difference is that simultaneous interpretation requires two interpreters to work together as a team and to take turns every 15-20 minutes. This is necessary to preserve the interpreters’ health and prevent mental fatigue during the demanding process of providing language interpretation simultaneously.

If your event can be described as a conference, convention, seminar or summit, simultaneous interpreter services are suitable. You want your message to flow as efficiently as possible, and the speed of this simultaneous service is most favorable in avoiding any delays in communication or content loss.

Organizers of large events rely on interpreting services for a streamlined flow of communication between multilingual participants.
There are many reasons why this method of interpretation is preferred:

  1. Convenience. Attend a conference anywhere around the world in any language and listen to the translating and interpreting service through your headsets.
  2. Broader Options. Participate in a global meeting with delegates speaking in several languages. Everyone can speak and be understood at the same time, without pauses or breaks, through the real-time interpretation of the desired language.
  3. Save time. Interpreter services have no more than a few seconds delay in the communication of information from one language to another, therefore you can better manage your time, without losing the message.
  4. No Language Barriers. When there is instantaneous interpretation made available at your event, the language barrier is no longer a concern. You can conduct business productively, resolve problems, and work through complex negotiations without communication delays, frustrations, or interruptions.
  5. Widely Adopted. Simultaneous interpretation is the preferred mode of interpretation at live conferences for the world’s most renowned international organizations, from the United Nations to the most successful corporations.
  6. Understand Semantics. Even if you have a basic knowledge of the speaker’s language, this form of interpretation helps you fully grasp the idiomatic expressions or the technical parts of the presentation in your native language.
  7. Professional. Interpreting services are provided by expert linguists who not only convert speech concurrently from the source to the target language, but do so masterfully, by adopting the voice of the speaker and capturing the nuances, the gestures, and fullness of meaning with pinpoint accuracy, throughout the whole interpretation.
  8. Maintain Audience Attention. Avoids the problem of having the participants wait, potentially losing their patience and interest in the event. If the subject of your event requires an individual’s full attention, you risk losing their focus if you are not using simultaneous interpreter services.
  • Onsite Simultaneous Interpretation: The interpreter is physically present at the location of the event. It is customary for an onsite simultaneous interpreter to work inside a soundproof booth and for the language interpretation to be heard by the audience via headset receivers. Onsite simultaneous interpreters are uniquely qualified and often need to travel to provide their services in international conferences around the globe. In fact given the limited supply of professional conference interpreters and equipment rental services around the world, a big event often requires the deployment of large crews of interpreters, technicians, project managers and large amounts of equipment, which can result in significant flight, hotel and transportation costs.
  • Remote Simultaneous Interpretation: Advanced cloud-based technology makes it possible for interpreters to work remotely from anywhere around the world, while audiences listen to the interpretation on their smartphone or electronic devices. Organizations that depend on simultaneous interpretation services for successful events find that remote interpretation is an excellent alternative to onsite interpretation and more cost-effective since they can save as much as 50% off traditional interpretation costs. With Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI), interpreters don’t have to be flown to events and equipment setup requirements are minimal, greatly simplifying the organization and delivery of the interpretation service. RSI greatly reduces the carbon footprint historically associated with onsite simultaneous interpretation services.

Scheduling and managing onsite interpreters is of the utmost importance for a successful multilingual event. However, these efforts would not be beneficial without the use of proper interpretation equipment.
When orchestrated correctly, the right equipment will allow for a seamless onsite interpreting service. While some equipment requirements can vary slightly, the core components are the same.

  • Interpreter Booth: Soundproof booths used to avoid noise interference. By hearing only the speaker, the interpreters are not distracted by ambient noise, and their interpretation can only be heard by the audience that it’s intended for. Depending on the audience size, you can choose from one of two interpreter booths:
  • Tabletop: Placed on a table, surrounding the interpreter on most sides it only provides partial sound isolation. This is recommended for smaller audiences or tighter spaces.
  • Freestanding: A larger fully-enclosed booth that is much more insulated, offering excellent sound isolation, complete with four walls and suitable for a team of two interpreters.
  • Interpreter Console: Allows the interpreter to take in the presenter’s speech through their headphones and microphone and instantly transform it into another language through simultaneous interpretation.
  • Transmitter: The interpreter translates what is said simultaneously into the target language and an Radio Frequency (RF) or IR (Infrared) transmitter instantly sends the signal to the digital headset receivers in the room.
  • Audience Headset Receivers: Worn by the audience members that need to hear the interpretation of the presentation. Delegates listen in to the interpretation through headphones plugged into their wireless receivers.

Successful interpretation requires more than just hiring the right company of interpreters. Proper preparation is key and will ensure a smooth and streamlined experience.

These four simultaneous interpretation tips will enhance the quality and overall experience at your next event.

  1. Determine the size of your audience. It’s important that you obtain the most accurate number of attendees so you can plan accordingly for the number of headsets needed.
  2. Figure out how many languages your event will need. The number of languages will determine the number of booths, transmitters and onsite technicians needed.
  3. Map out where the interpreters will be seated. Due to the high concentration required for this line of work, it’s important to map out a place for the booth where the interpreters feel most comfortable and have a good view of the speaker.
  4. Talk to your interpreters prior to the event. Make clear your requirements, your audience and their needs so they can deliver the best experience for your attendees.
  5. Taking the Next Step towards a Successful Event. It’s time to find the right interpreter services near you now that you’ve identified that this form of interpretation is right for your business’ needs.

Consecutive Interpretation (Remote Mode)

Remote interpreting in the consecutive mode means interpreters connected to our meeting platform can provide interpretation from anywhere around the world vs interpreting onsite which requires interpreters be physically present in the same room or meeting as those who need the interpretation.

Remote Consecutive interpretation is the process by which a remote interpreter interprets what is said, after it is said from one language into another. Technology plays a critical role for the remote interpreter to have a clear view of the speakers and to hear what is being said perfectly in order to interpret effectively for the listeners.

Remote consecutive interpretation can be offered in two primary ways:

  • Over-The-Phone Interpretation (OPI)
With OPI, a remote interpreter can only hear what is being said before interpreting it into another language since the interpretation takes place through a phone call without a video feed. It is the most cost-effective method of providing consecutive interpretation and it is available on short notice.
  • Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) via Video Conferencing
VRI is a commonly used term to refer to consecutive interpretation provided by a remote interpreter who can both be seen on an electronic device and can also see everyone else participating in a meeting regardless of where they may be. When we refer to remote consecutive interpretation in this section we are referring primarily to the video conferencing type allowing the interpreter to be seen and heard on live streaming video.
  •  The remote interpreter logs in to your web conferencing platform of choice, including our own KUDO platform.
  • The interpreter is approved to work remotely with a professional computer system that includes an HD webcam, a USB microphone and a reliable broadband Internet connection.
  • Meeting participants log into web conferencing platform from one or multiple locations with the appropriate hardware and internet connectivity to be seen and heard perfectly by the interpreter.
  • The interpreter provides some basic instructions and rules of engagement when working with professional consecutive interpreters.
  1. User-friendly since clients can use their own web conferencing platform of choice and invite the interpreter to join. Our own KUDO platform is a great option for organizations that don’t already have a preferred web conferencing service.
  2. Easy to set up since it only requires modern day computer equipment and hardware readily available in offices and meeting venues with a stable high speed internet connection.
  3. Short notice requests can be accommodated easily. Since interpreters can work remotely from anywhere around the world, there is a much bigger supply of qualified interpreters for a given job, making interpreter scheduling simple and hassle-free.
  4. Languages of lesser diffusion or rare languages can be provided in areas whether there is no local availability like for example rural communities, small cities or vacation resorts.
  5. High-level interpreters with specialized training for legal, medical, community and business interpretation.
  6. Interpreters don’t need to travel which lowers the costs associated with onsite interpretation.
  7. Ideal for interviews, brief meetings, online and on-premise proceedings and other events for which consecutive interpretation is required.
  8. Alternatively, remote simultaneous interpretation may be a better option for longer interactive meetings or presentations such as webinars and webcasts.
